October Sky

In science class, we recently watched a movie relating to science, math and character education. The movie we watched was October Sky. It was about a young man who wanted bigger and better things then other peoples expectations of him.
This movie connects to character education becuase it shoes self-control. Homer and his pals, failed rocket lift off many times. Instead of getting mad and making the situation worse, they tried again. Their self-control showed the whole town that if you keep trying, you can do whatever you plan on. After many test rockets they got a succesful, high in the air lift off. The movie showed cooperation when the team worked together to build a more efficiant rocket. Also they cooperated with the teachers, and metal workers. With everyones help they were succesfull. With out cooperation in a group, nothing can be completed. It also showed respect. When the group had to pick one person to go to the science convention, they picked Homer. They knew he had earned it, and studied alot of rocket science to get there.
This movie showed science and math connections too. When they got in trouble with the cops, they used math to show they were innocent of setting a fire. They showed that the power, and angles of the rocket they fired , and the wind, couldnt match up with that spot. This movie was very educational and was alot more than just the eyes.

Tay Sachs Disease Review

After reading a fellow students blog, I have a better understanding on the Genetic Disorder Tay Sachs disease. Tay sachs disease is when the the enzyme that controls the fat tissue in the brain is lacking, and it builds up in the nerves in the brain. When this occurs many symptoms happen. First, the infant gets red dots in their eyes, and mental and physical activities become impossible to do. Some later symptoms are blindness, being unable to swallow, seizures, becoming deaf, and being more startled by loud noises. This disease is recessive so it acquires both parents to have it. Tay Sachs disease mostly effects babies that are French, Canadian, and with Eastern European and Jewish family. The sad part about this disease is that there is no cure. Only few medicines to help control the pain and suffering. Most of the money donated for Tay Sachs disease doesn't go to the cure, but instead to pleasure and cheer up children with this genetic disorder. I have sympathy and sadness for people that have Tay Sachs disease. They undergo so much that it just breaks your heart.

Phenylketonuria

Phenlyketonuria is a very rare but very harmful disease. Phenlyketonuria is when a baby lacks the enzyme to convert phenylalanine into tyrosine after protein is consumed. When the symptoms are not treated, such as a musty odor in the skin, hair and urine, loss of weight from vomiting and chronic diarrhea, and sensitivity to light, Phenyalalnine then builds up in the blood stream and brain. It clogs it all up and can create central nervous system problems, and mental retardation. Only one out of 10,000 - 15,000 get this disease, but it is devastating. Phenlyketonuria shows up more in White and Asian people and could only be acquired  when your born. PKU, another name for Phenylketonuria, is a recessive allele. So in order to get this disease both parents need to be PKU dominant. If one parent held a PKU allele , and the other doesn't, the baby would be a PKU carrier but not show symptoms of the disease. PKU takes the lives of about 27,000 humans a year. Ivar Asbjorn Folling discovered the disease in 1934, and people have been trying to find cures for PKU ever since. One of the few treatments out there for a person with PKU are a life long, special induced protein diet. They have to be careful because you need protein to keep your body functioning and to build and fix cells. I feel sad to hear about this disease because, people who have it, have it for their whole lives and got it when they were born. I wish I could help people with PKU and make their lives more enjoyable. PKU awareness can help everyone and will help understand what people go through daily.

Current Event

Imagine having an actual space station, where people basically live up in outer space. Now you might think that's unlikely, but China is planning to make a space station called the "Tiangong-1" in 2011. Now its just a plan, but prototypes are being built as we speak. They have to make the perfect machine do aparate so nothing goes wrong. China is doing this to expand on their knowledge on space and do research on zero gravity. This seems pretty facinating to me becuase I have only seen space stations in movies. To see it actually happen in real life is a milestone for the science world. Along with being able to build a space station, that will help understand possible buildings on other planets.

Local Current Events/ Social Studies

Our high school, the South Brunswick High school, just had a recent lose. Our football coach has resigned. After a 9 and 2 record and bringing the team to the playoffs he has quit. Coach Mantz has left with a good title , by leading the team to their first playoff win. But he hasn't officially said why he had left. Some want him to join Rutgers and help coaching there some how. "
Numerous attempts to reach Mr. Mantz and Athletic Director Elaine McGrath were unsuccessful on Wednesday." I guess Mr. Mantz just wants to be left alone. I am saddend by this event becuase he did such a good job. But it happends and change must occur. Lets just hope that the South Brunwick High School gets another succesful coach.

Class Response

Sir Isaac Newton is one of the most well known scientists known in today's time. His work was about 300 years ago, but his theories are still correct and used throughout life now. Just driving in a car is using one of Newton's laws. Isaac Newton has 3 laws of motion; 1. "Every object persists in its state or rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless its compelled to change that state by forces impressed on it", 2. " Force is equal to the change in momentum(mv) per change in time. For a constant mass, force equals mass times acceleration' F(force)=M(mass) X A(acceleration)", 3. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." Isaac Newton was so smart, when he was only 23, he already had theories of gravitation! In science class, we are making roller coasters out of simple items, like paper tubes. The marble, when rolling down the coaster, is applied to law 1. The marble is moving in a straight line down the coaster until a hill comes up and exerts a force upon the marble, which slows it down. My opinion on this topic is very shocked. I am amazed that from 300 years ago a theory is still in place. People even tried to disprove Newton's laws, but failed. I give kudos to Sir Isaac Newton and hope is Laws Of Motion stay in place for the rest of time on Earth.

Some recent state news was that Governor Corzine signed a bill for letting guns be purchased in New Jersey. The law states that a gun can be purchased by legal buyers only once every 30 days. Most people disagree with Governor Corzine's decision because New jersey has very st stict gun laws and that how do they know they wont buy guns for criminals. Also, since the gun doesn't have a legitimate purpose, the handgun will be abused.
"Trying to reduce gun crime by rationing guns to law-abiding citizens is as absurd as trying to reduce drunk driving by rationing cars to responsible drinkers, which is why New Jersey courts have twice rejected such laws," was a quote from Scott Bach, President of the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs. This is saying the law doesn't technically prevent anything, regarding the safeness of the citizens. I oppose this law and I'm not sure why he would make such a law. New Jersey is one of the view states that is very safe and aware of guns and their laws. Now it made our state less as respected in the opposing gun war.

Current Event

Professor James Friend and his crew at Monash University have been researching and trying to miniaturize the tubes to look into patients body during surgery. Even in smaller operations, damage has been done because of the over sized tube that are being moved around in the body. It could sometimes cut and artery or blood vessel. They needed to find a way to fix that problem. They have been looking for an answer for the past two years. Professor Friend used
piezoelectricity, the energy used for stoves, in extremely small mechanical robots to swim around in the blood. This is an easy way to look at the problem in the body with out more damage done. I think that the scientific age is growing at a rapid pace. Miniaturizing objects is a very smart thing to do. It says in the article it could probably even reach the brain area with these small robots. I am shocked and intrigued by how by just making an object smaller it could have many benefits.

An important event in history has recently occurred. Yes, the inauguration for the 44Th president has occurred. But, what is a great part of this is that President Barrack Hussein Obama is the first black president in the United States. Many years ago people thought a black president was impossible. Now to actually see it happen, resurrects the souls of many and even kids know they can be what ever they want to be when there older. I think that this whole event is amazing. I can be able to tell my kids how i witnessed what had happend. A black man is president. Breaking the barrior of what can be done.

“Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America,” Some thought as heroic words, but this inspirational sentence shows the start of a new nation. One that is more united and that will have to work a little to be the best country we can. One part in article number one it is telling how there was some struggle at when Obama was being sworn in. Jusitce Roberts messed up with the words slightly. So it was a little wierd. But after that it all went smooth. There was so many people who went to the swearing in. It was loud and filled with emotions. There was much police at the event to prevent an accedent.

"first black leader as millions watched from the National Mall and around the world." This quote was saying that many people from around the world watched this important event. Especially since America might be on the brink of a world war III. But Obama is there to insure the saftey of our country and expedite the process of recovering the economy. We trust him and expect Barrack to do good. He has already started to fit in to the White House and got to work in Guantonomo Bay.

Can rocks move? Well on mars small rocks called clasts seem to move a lot. Scientist were stunned by this phenomenon. Jon Pelletier a geologist has been trying to find out how these scattered clasts "move". It seemed to be that the wind blew the rocks forward. But since the planet mars has a skinny atmosphere that would be harder to do. So what scientist found out was that the rocks go through a system called the "tidy arrangement". What scientist think what happens is that the wind from the windy planet picks up sand from the planet and places it behind the rock. Making small dunes behind the rock. Which also creates a hole in front of the rock. So as long as the wind keeps blowing in Mars the clasts will keep moving.
